Project Overview

A residential property in the Peterborough area sought to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance its energy efficiency by investing in a high-performance solar energy system. The customer, looking to expand their renewable energy capacity in the future, approached Optimum Electrics for a bespoke solution that would not only meet their current energy needs but also accommodate potential future upgrades, including an electric vehicle (EV) and heat pump.

Optimum Electrics designed and installed a 7.6kW solar system that incorporated the latest in solar panel technology, with an emphasis on both performance and aesthetics.

Design and Consultation

Our Solar Technicians worked closely with the client to design a system that aligned with their energy goals and plans for future development. The chosen solution needed to deliver high energy output while being adaptable to the customer’s evolving needs.

Key aspects of the design included:

  • High-Efficiency Solar Panels: The 16 AIKO Neostar Generation 3 475W all-black panels were selected for their superior efficiency and sleek design. These panels are among the best in the market for both performance and aesthetics, providing up to 7.6kW of power.

  • Sigenergy Inverter and Battery: An 8kW Sigenergy hybrid inverter and an 8kW Sigenergy battery were chosen to provide both energy storage and management. The battery’s IP66 rating was a key factor in its selection, as it would be installed outdoors. The Sigenergy system also offered scalability, allowing the customer to add a second battery in the future as their energy demands grow.

Installation Process

The installation of the solar system took place over three days, with careful planning and coordination to ensure minimal disruption to the household. As the solar system was to be installed on a large outbuilding separate from the main house, there were additional logistical challenges to address, particularly in terms of power supply and system integration.

The installation process included the following steps:

  1. Solar Panel Mounting: The 16 AIKO Neostar Generation 3 panels were installed on the roof of the outbuilding, chosen for their high efficiency and subtle, all-black design. The panels were arranged to optimize sun exposure and energy generation.

  2. Battery and Inverter Setup: The 8kW Sigenergy inverter and the IP66-rated Sigenergy battery were positioned to ensure reliable performance and easy access for maintenance. The battery was installed outside to take advantage of its weatherproof rating, which is critical for outdoor applications.

  3. Trenching for Power Supply: A key challenge was that the outbuilding was separate from the main home, requiring a power supply to connect the two. A 600mm trench was dug between the house and the outbuilding (completed by our friends at Haddon Building Services) to facilitate the installation of the power supply cables, ensuring that the property could be powered by the solar PV system and battery-stored energy.

  4. System Integration: The inverter and battery were connected to the property’s electrical system, ensuring that the energy generated by the solar panels could be stored in the battery and used to power the home. The system was configured to optimise energy usage and storage, providing flexibility for future additions such as an EV charger and heat pump.

Conclusion

This 7.6kW solar installation in Peterborough is a great example of how Optimum Electrics can help homeowners save money and reduce their carbon footprint. With 16 state-of-the-art AIKO Neostar solar panels, a powerful Sigenergy battery, and a design that accounts for future upgrades, this system is designed to meet the homeowner’s needs today—and in the years to come.
