14.2kW Solar PV and Battery Storage System – Peterborough

AIKO solar panels installed on home in Peterborough

Project Overview

This Peterborough home was undergoing a full renovation, including the installation of a new heat pump, a refurbished swimming pool, and the switch from an oil boiler to an air source heat pump (ASHP). With high existing energy bills and these new energy-intensive additions, the household faced the potential of monthly bills exceeding £600.

Optimum Electrics was approached to design a future-proof solar PV and battery storage system that could not only reduce energy costs but also support the home through intermittent power cuts that the area is liable to, and accommodate future plans for electric showers, an EV, and electric cooking appliances.

System Design

Given the home’s large south-facing roof, we recommended a slightly oversized system to cater for both current and future energy demands. Key components included:

  • 28 x 510W AIKO Neostar 2S All Black Solar Panels – highly efficient and visually sleek panels, perfectly suited for residential rooftops.

  • 1 x 12kW Sigenergy Hybrid Inverter – converting the generated solar energy into usable electricity efficiently.

  • 16kWh Sigenergy Battery Storage – providing substantial capacity to store excess energy for use when needed.

  • 1 x Sigenergy HomeMax Gateway – ensuring critical appliances remain online during power cuts, a priority for the homeowners.

  • 1 x 7kW Sigenergy EV Charger – future-proofing the home for electric vehicle charging.

  • Fastensol Roof Mounting and Bird Protection Meshing – ensuring the panels are securely mounted while minimising maintenance.

Installation Process

The installation took place in July 2025, carefully coordinated around the ongoing renovations to ensure minimal disruption. The large south-facing roof allowed for an efficient layout of 28 high-performance AIKO Neostar panels, optimally oriented to maximise energy generation.

Results and Benefits

The completed 14.2kW solar PV and battery storage system delivered multiple benefits for the homeowners:

  • Significant reduction in energy bills, particularly during periods of high energy usage from the ASHP, swimming pool, and future electric appliances.

  • Resilience during power cuts, with the HomeMax Gateway ensuring critical systems remained online.

  • Future-proofed for additional electrical loads including EV charging, electric showers, and cooking appliances.

  • Environmentally friendly energy production, reducing the household’s carbon footprint.

Conclusion

This Peterborough project showcases how a carefully designed solar PV and battery storage system can provide substantial savings, resilience, and flexibility for a modern, energy-intensive home. By planning for both current needs and future expansions, Optimum Electrics delivered a system that ensures efficiency, reliability, and peace of mind.
